Dubois County weighs INDOT proposal to transfer control of US 231 segments

DUBOIS CO. – Officials in Dubois County are currently evaluating a proposal from the Indiana Department of Transportation that could see the county assume control of certain sections of US 231, including portions running through Jasper and Huntingburg.

This potential ownership transfer is connected to the ongoing Mid-States Corridor project, a major infrastructure initiative in the region. If approved, over 19 miles of the current state highway could be shifted to local authorities’ jurisdiction.

While discussions are still in the preliminary stages, county officials have already raised concerns regarding the potential increase in future maintenance costs associated with these roadways, notably the upkeep of bridges along the proposed transferred sections. County officials say the review process will likely involve a thorough assessment of the financial and logistical implications for Dubois County.
