MONROE CO. – A fatal multi-vehicle crash occurred on West State Road 46 at the intersection of Hunter Valley Road on Saturday afternoon. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene at approximately 2:28 PM.
Initial reports indicate that the crash was caused by a vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of SR 46. Witness statements revealed that a white 2007 Mercury Milan was traveling east, left the eastbound lanes, crossed the grass median, and continued eastbound in the westbound lanes.
The wrong-way Mercury Milan then collided head-on with a gray 2025 Buick Enclave. A 2025 Mercedes-Benz, which was traveling next to the Buick Enclave, was unable to avoid the collision and was also involved in the crash.
The driver of the 2007 Mercury Milan was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. The driver of the 2025 Buick Enclave was transported by ambulance and is reported to have sustained several broken bones. The driver of the 2025 Mercedes-Benz sustained multiple non-life-threatening injuries.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office shut down the roadway to allow their crash reconstructionist to investigate the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Monroe County Coroner’s Office is working to notify the deceased driver’s family and will release their name once notification has been made.
