Obituary: George Melford Tomey

November 13, 1941 – April 21, 2025

George Melford Tomey, 83, of Bedford, formerly from Washington, Indiana, passed away at his home on Monday, April 21, 2025, with his family by his side.

Born November 13, 1941, in Washington, Indiana, he was the son of James (Hap) and Nona (Moore) Tomey. He married Sharon Riker on August 7, 1960, and she survives. He attended Washington High School before joining the army, where he was a member of the 82nd Airborne and was stationed in Berlin, Germany, during the building of the Berlin Wall. He was an oil distributor before becoming a farmer in Lawrence and Jackson County. He and his wife later enjoyed managing campgrounds in the Colorado National Forest, where they loved the mountains and all the wonderful friends they made. He was a member of the Ft. Ritner Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon, of Bedford, Indiana; daughter, Lisa (Chris) Judah of Springville, Indiana; son, Mike (Jamie) Tomey of Bedford, Indiana; grandchildren, Christina Tomey, Michael (fiancée Kristy), Matthew (Courtney) Tomey, John Moore, and Jayson Moore.

The great joys of his life were his great-grandchildren, Garrett Tomey, Aaron Tomey, Elisabeth Tomey, Autumn Tomey, Landon Potter, and Zoie Potter; Siblings, James Richard (Anita) Tomey and Cheryl Noble.

George was preceded in death by his parents, James (Hap) and Nona (Moore) Tomey, and two sisters, Phyllis Burton and Judith Lindley.

George loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, camping at the Grand Mesa, and horseback riding.

If anyone ever needed a helping hand, he was there. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and will be greatly missed until we see him again.

Cremation has been chosen, and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. The care and arrangements for George have been entrusted to the Ferguson-Lee Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes in Bedford.
