Flood Warning extended for East Fork of White River: Crest approaching Shoals

INDIANA – The National Weather Service has extended the flood warning for the East Fork of the White River, impacting communities from Seymour downstream to Shoals. Major flooding continues along this stretch of the river, posing ongoing challenges for residents and infrastructure.

According to the latest reports, the crest of the floodwaters on the East Fork of the White River passed Williams Thursday afternoon and is forecast to reach the Town of Shoals early Friday morning.

While Seymour is anticipated to fall below flood stage early Friday morning, communities further downstream will continue to experience above-flood-stage conditions for an extended period. The current forecast indicates that the East Fork of the White River will remain above flood stage until Thursday, April 17th.

Adding a layer of uncertainty, there is a chance of showers and thunderstorms across the region this afternoon and evening. While the anticipated total rainfall amounts are relatively low, ranging from a tenth to a quarter of an inch, even this amount could prolong the duration of the flooding, particularly if the higher rainfall totals occur within the river basin. However, this additional rainfall is not expected to raise the current predicted crest significantly.

Residents along the East Fork of the White River, especially those in and around Shoals, are urged to remain vigilant and continue monitoring the flood. The extended flood warning highlights the prolonged impact of the recent heavy rainfall.

Local authorities continue to emphasize the dangers of driving through flooded roadways and encourage residents in affected areas to heed safety warnings and utilize available resources, such as the emergency shelter opened in Shoals. Staying informed through official channels and checking on neighbors remain crucial during this period of major flooding.
