Roads submerged, emergency shelter open in Shoals

SHOALS – Rising floodwaters have created hazardous conditions throughout the Town of Shoals, prompting local officials to issue an urgent safety warning to residents. Numerous roads are currently submerged and impassable, and an emergency shelter has been opened for those displaced by the flooding.

The following roads within the Town of Shoals are currently reported as underwater:

  • Main Street (near 8th and Spout Springs)
  • Sherfick School Road
  • Ironton
  • Water Street
  • West River Road
  • East River Road
  • Chicken Farm Road
  • Parts of 1st Street
  • Low Street
  • Hedge Street
  • 2nd Street
  • High Street
  • 7th Street
  • 8th Street

In addition to these roadways, significant flooding has also been reported in the following areas:

  • McBride Bluff
  • Butler Bridge
  • Windom Road
  • Hickory Ridge Road
  • The intersection of Poplar and Stephens

Officials strongly urge all residents to avoid driving through flooded roadways, regardless of whether the pavement appears visible. The depth and current of floodwaters can be deceptive and extremely dangerous, posing a significant risk to vehicles and occupants.

An emergency shelter is now open at Shoals Community School Corporation for residents who have been displaced from their homes or require assistance due to the flooding. Anyone whose family has been affected by the rising waters is encouraged to seek shelter there.

Residents needing assistance or displaced are also urged to contact the Town of Shoals at 812-247-2110.

Adding to the urgency, Duke Energy will begin disconnecting electricity to flood-affected Low and High Street homes starting this morning, April 10th. This measure is being taken as a safety precaution due to the rising water levels.

Residents needing relocation assistance are asked to contact Shoals Town Hall to be added to a shared list with the American Red Cross. The Red Cross will aid and support those affected by the flooding.

Local officials are also urging the community to check on their neighbors, particularly the elderly or those with mobility issues, who the flooding may impact. Sharing this critical information is vital to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Shoals residents. Please remain vigilant and heed the warnings of local authorities as the flood situation continues to evolve.
