Infant dies after dog attack in Brownstown

BROWNSTOWN – A tragic incident in Jackson County has resulted in the death of a two-month-old infant following an attack by a dog.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department responded to a 911 call at approximately 12:26 p.m. on Thursday from a residence in the 1800 block of Jackson County Road 100 East. The mother reported that a dog had attacked her infant daughter.

Emergency responders from the Brownstown Fire Department were the first to arrive on the scene, reaching the location within approximately four minutes of the initial call. Firefighters immediately began administering CPR to the injured infant.

Recognizing the critical nature of the situation, a deputy’s police vehicle was used to transport the baby to a Jackson County EMS ambulance en route. Rescue workers continued to provide life support to the infant as they were transported to Schneck Medical Center.

Despite the rapid response and life-saving efforts, the infant was pronounced dead a short time after arriving at the Seymour hospital.

Detectives with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal dog attack. The dog involved in the incident, identified as a pit bull, has been taken into custody and is held at the Jackson County K-9 Control Center.

The Brownstown Police Department also assisted at the scene of the tragic event.
