Daughters of the American Revolution honor Revolutionary War soldiers with new plaque

BEDFORD—The Lawrence County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday hosted the John Wallace Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for the presentation of a new plaque honoring Revolutionary War soldiers. This plaque will join two others at the courthouse, bringing the total number of honored service members to 48.

Martha Cox is holding the new plaque honoring those who served and are buried in Lawrence County.

Established in 1949, the original plaque contained 29 names, with a second plaque adding 16 more in 1976. The new plaque will add 13 names to the rolls of those who served in the Revolution and are buried in Lawrence County.

According to Martha Cox of the John Wallace Chapter, the $1,800 cost of the new plaque was covered through fundraising efforts and a $500 grant. The DAR chapter will also fund the installation of the new plaque and the cleaning of the existing plaques. The goal was to complete the project for the country’s 250th anniversary.

This initiative underscores the John Wallace Chapter’s dedication to preserving the memory of those who fought for American independence.
