Fort Branch man arrested after pawning stolen golf clubs

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Bedford Police Officer Justin Dodd, the theft was reported on December 17, 2024. A woman stated that the clubs belonging to her boyfriend were taken from an unlocked shed sometime between December 16th and 17th.

The break in the case came when Detective Shelhart visited Ace Pawn Shop on December 17th while following up on an unrelated matter. The pawn shop directed him to 13 golf clubs brought in on December 16th. Detective Shelhart noted the serial number of the 45-degree iron. On December 18th, after receiving the serial numbers from the owner, Detective Shelhart confirmed that the serial numbers on the irons and the 45-degree iron matched the stolen clubs. The serial number on the driver was similar but not an exact match, which was attributed to the owner providing the information over the phone.

Ace Pawn Shop provided a bill of sale showing that Michael Justin Canfield sold the clubs for $200 on December 16, 2024, at 10:56 a.m.

The golf clubs were recovered and returned to the owner, who confirmed that only a red and black Callaway rangefinder, valued at approximately $170, remained missing.

The information was forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office, and a warrant was issued for Canfield’s arrest.

Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
