Obituary: Mary Edna (Skeen) Mathews

December 2, 1935 – February 18, 2025

Mary Edna (Skeen) Mathews, 89, of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at IU Health Hospital of Bedford.

She was born in Lawrence County on December 2, 1935, to Roy R. and Imogene (Davis) Skeen. She married Chester Mathews on January 1, 1959, and he preceded her in death on February 11, 2010.

Mary graduated from Fayetteville High School, class of 1953, and retired from NSWC Crane after 42 years. She was a member of Valley Mission Church of the Nazarene and was one of the original members of the Marshall Township Ladies’ Auxiliary. Mary loved boating, fishing, camping, and quilting.

Surviving to cherish Mary’s memory are her two daughters, Sherri (Jim) Corey and Shannon (Chris) Johnson; five grandchildren, Mistie (Jerry) Taylor, Cody (Brittany) Moore, Jenna (Jake) Bedwell, Emmalee Johnson, and Ellise Johnson; and five great-grandchildren, Lexi, Alivia, Zaidyn, Waylon and Myles; along with several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Mary in death were her parents, husband, two stepdaughters, Judy and Linda, and four siblings, Jimmie Skeen, Michael Skeen, Marjorie Reynolds, and Karen Pace.

Funeral services for Mary will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, February 24, 2025, at the Ferguson- Lee Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes in Bedford, with Pastor John Paulus officiating. Burial will follow in White River Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service on Monday in the Ferguson-Lee Chapel.
