BEDFORD—The City of Bedford Council convened Tuesday evening at the StoneGate Arts and Education Center. Members heard an update from Shance Sizemore, CEO of the Lawrence County Economic Growth Council (LCEGC), and approved a $25,000 allocation from the city’s restricted opioid fund to support the organization’s initiatives.

Sizemore outlined the LCEGC’s ongoing efforts to stimulate economic development in the county, emphasizing workforce development programs, business retention strategies, and infrastructure improvements. He highlighted recent successes in attracting new businesses and expanding local industries, stressing the importance of continued investment in economic growth.
Following Sizemore’s presentation, the council voted to grant $25,000 from the city’s restricted opioid fund to the LCEGC. The decision came after a discussion on how the funds would be used to support economic recovery efforts, particularly in addressing workforce shortages and providing employment opportunities for individuals affected by the opioid crisis.
Council members expressed support for the measure, with some emphasizing the interconnectedness of economic stability and community health. According to officials, the funding will assist the LCEGC in implementing programs aimed at strengthening the local workforce and fostering sustainable economic growth.
