CLINTON CO. – A routine traffic stop on Interstate 65 near the 158-mile marker on February 11, 2025, has resulted in the arrest of two individuals and the recovery of suspected stolen property valued at over $50,000. Indiana State Police Trooper Brandon Howell stopped a 2023 Lincoln Navigator matching the description of a vehicle involved in a theft in Countryside, Illinois.
The driver, Procoror Muntean, 23, of Queens Village, NY, and the passenger, Retan Varga, 26, of East Kent, WA, were investigated after troopers noted signs of potential criminal activity and received information linking them to a separate theft in West Allis, Wisconsin. A subsequent search warrant of the vehicle revealed jewelry, U.S. currency, electronics, a false ID card, and marijuana.
Muntean also exhibited signs of impairment and was believed to be under the influence of a controlled substance. During transport to the Clinton County Jail, he allegedly attempted to discard a watch inside the patrol car. Varga was also arrested on an outstanding warrant from the Countryside Police Department.
Muntean faces preliminary charges, including theft, obstruction of justice, possession of a false government ID, operating while intoxicated, and possession of marijuana. Varga is facing charges of theft, possession of a false government ID, and possession of marijuana.
The Indiana State Police are working with authorities in Illinois and Wisconsin to determine the origins of the recovered items and return them to their owners. The investigation is ongoing, and no further information is being released.
Those facing criminal charges are considered innocent unless convicted through due legal proceedings. Accusations alone do not imply guilt; the judicial system will evaluate the presented evidence to reach a verdict.
