BLOOMINGTON — A former Indiana University (IU) student has avoided jail time and seen multiple charges dismissed following a plea agreement in a 2023 rape case.

Michael Greenberger, 20, entered a guilty plea in a negotiated plea deal to a Level 6 felony charge of battery with moderate bodily injury. In exchange, two Level 3 felony rape charges were dropped. The agreement resulted in a sentence of one year on house arrest, alongside mandatory counseling and treatment. Greenberger will also be required to pay $1,500 in restitution to the victim, who was not affiliated with IU, and $189 in court costs.
The incident occurred on November 15, 2023, at Foster Hall on the IU campus. The victim reported the assault two days later at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. Greenberger was arrested on December 7, 2023, immediately was suspended, and trespassed from the university.
As part of the plea deal, Monroe County Circuit Court 2 Judge Valeri Haughton issued a no-contact order, barring Greenberger from contacting the victim.
