Bald eagle officially named national bird of the United States

WASHINGTON, D.C.– The bald eagle has officially been designated as the national bird of the United States. President Joe Biden signed into law legislation on Tuesday, December 24, that formally amends the U.S. Code to make the eagle the nation’s official avian symbol.

For over 240 years, the bald eagle has embodied the spirit of America. The bird has been an enduring symbol of power, resilience, and independence. The eagle has also been featured on the Great Seal of the United States since its design was finalized in 1782, representing the nation’s ideals with an olive branch, arrows, a shield, and the motto “E Pluribus Unum.”

While the bald eagle has appeared as the national emblem since 1782, its status as the national bird has never been officially recognized until now. It was only recently that Congress took action to correct this oversight. This designation marks an important moment in recognizing the eagle’s significance to the nation’s history and its ongoing cultural identity.
