Bloomington woman arrested after firing shots that entered an apartment where a child was sleeping

BLOOMINGTON— A Bloomington woman was arrested Tuesday morning after Bloomington Police say she fired a gun several times at a moving vehicle.

Police responded just before 5:00 a.m. to an apartment complex near South Winslow Court.

A witness told investigators they woke up to what sounded like several people arguing in a nearby parking lot. When the neighbor looked out their window, they saw four muzzle flashes. Witnesses identified 19-year-old Emma Spears as the shooter. After firing the weapon, she went back inside her apartment.

Police secured a search warrant for the apartment and found a handgun, ammunition, bloody clothing, and other items of interest.

Police say the bullets missed the car, but bullets went into a nearby apartment where a one-year-old child was sleeping. The child’s mother woke when she heard the shots fired and found her son covered in dust and noticed a bullet hole above his bed in the ceiling.

Spears told police there was a fight between her boyfriend and another man and woman before the shooting. She admitted she fired two shots from her apartment.

She said the other woman threatened her because she had a gun. She told police when the group left in a car, she heard two shots being fired from the vehicle. So she fired back at the car because she believed they were aiming to shoot her. She couldn’t tell police who was firing the weapon from the vehicle because she couldn’t see them through the tinted windows.

Police arrested Spears on a charge of criminal recklessness, a Level 5 felony. She will appear in Monroe Circuit Court 3 for an initial hearing on Thursday at 1:00 p.m.
