SALEM – Bedford North Lawrence hurlers Maddox Garrison and Grayson Gillespie combined for a two-hit gem as the Stars shut down Salem 5-0 during high school baseball action on Thursday.
Garrison (1-0) allowed only two singles in four innings, while Gillespie struck out four in three innings of relief for BNL (2-2).
“Maddox and Grayson went out there and put up seven zeros” BNL coach Steven McNabb said. “It makes it easy to get a win. I couldn’t be prouder of them.. We’re super excited for what this is going to do for their confidence. If Maddox competes in the strike zone, he will give us chances. He did a nice job.”
The Stars made the most of four hits, taking advantage of eight walks. BNL scored runs in the second (two walks and a Salem error), third (Jaden Gilbert single and Cutler Chastain two-out RBI double) and fifth (Jackson Jones was hit by pitch, stole two bases and scored on a fielder’s choice).
BNL capped the scoring with two runs in the seventh (two walks and a bases-loaded error).
”We won the free base war,” McNabb said. “We just couldn’t get the crooked number to put the game away. But we pitched well and didn’t have errors. When you do those things, you have a chance to win.”
The Stars will host Indianapolis Cathedral, ranked No.11 in the Class 3A preseason poll, on Friday.
