Obituary: Claude D. Shuffitt

January 10, 1962 – April 5, 2026

Claude D. Shuffitt, 64, passed away at 12:33 pm on Sunday, April 5, 2026, at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born January 10, 1962, he was the son of Barbara (Pieper) Shuffitt and Frank and Judith (Bumps) Shuffitt. He married Pauline Rydenbark on May 6, 2000. He worked as a jeweler in several jewelry stores in Monroe County before joining J. Howard Jewelers in 2008, and he worked there until his retirement in 2020. He also worked as an assembler at Cook Inc.

He graduated from John Marshall High School in 1981, where he took jewelry classes that started his career of over 40 years. He enjoyed watching IU football and basketball, the Indianapolis Colts, and NASCAR.

He was a family man who loved his kids and grandkids. He was always available for anyone who needed that help. Claude always had a smile and a joke to tell; he loved a good prank and pulling off a joke. He was a softball coach at Brown County Parks and Recreation for many years. He was a good listener and gave good advice. Claude was a fantastic cook.

Claude was a friend to everyone and never met a stranger.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline, of Nashville; four children, Ceanna Shuffitt, Brittany Miller, Joseph Shuffitt, Marissa Shuffitt; a stepson, Stephen R. Richter; six grandchildren, Jason Miller, Skyler Miller, Kameron Miller, Maia Miller, Brandon Shuffitt, Madilyn Shuffitt; siblings, Michael Shuffitt, Robert Shuffitt, Richard Shuffitt, Steven Shuffitt, Melissa Burks, Jake Shuffitt; several nieces and nephews; mother-in-law, Janice Rydenbark.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Shuffitt, who passed away when he was four; his father and stepmother, Frank and Judy Shuffitt, who raised him; a brother, Joseph Shuffitt; and a sister, Jennifer Humphries.

Following Claude’s wishes, cremation was chosen. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary.
