INDIANA – To bridge the gap between classroom theory and chaotic real-world emergencies, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) is deploying its EMS Mobile Simulation Laboratory to first responders across the state.

Once housed in a repurposed ambulance, the program has evolved into a state-of-the-art trailer specifically engineered for high-fidelity medical simulations. This “classroom on wheels” provides a safe yet incredibly immersive environment for both students and seasoned veterans to master life-saving procedures.
Meet the “Hals”: A Family of Human Simulators
The core of the lab’s effectiveness lies in its fleet of high-fidelity manikins. Unlike static plastic models, these simulators are programmed to react, communicate, and respond to treatment in real time.

- Adult “Hal”: Resembling a man in his 30s or 40s, Hal can talk to responders and sustain invasive procedures, including intubation, IV/IO access, surgical cricothyrotomy, and needle decompression.
- Pediatric & Trauma Hal: These specialized units allow teams to practice delicate pediatric emergencies or high-stakes “Stop the Bleed” trauma scenarios.
- Noelle: An advanced OB/GYN manikin designed for childbirth simulations. She is often paired with a high-fidelity neonatal baby to practice newborn resuscitation.
Beyond the manikins, the lab is outfitted with advanced diagnostic tools, including a field ultrasound device to check for internal injuries, as well as dedicated pediatric and adult airway training heads.
Availability and Booking: Bringing the Lab to Your County
The Mobile Sim Lab is a free resource available to all levels of EMS certification and fire personnel throughout Indiana. Whether for a formal EMS class, departmental continuing education, or a regional training event, the unit can be requested for travel anywhere in the state.

When is it available?
- Standard Hours: Monday through Friday during normal business hours.
- Special Requests: Weeknights and weekends may be available, subject to approval by the simulation coordinator.
How to Request:
- Email: Contact the team directly at esimlab@dhs.in.gov.
- Acadis Portal: Personnel can check the calendar by logging into the Acadis Portal. Under “Academy Resources,” select “Browse or Request Rentable Resources” and navigate to the “Mobile Sim Lab.”
- Local Customization: IDHS requests that agencies provide an electronic copy of their specific local protocols. This allows the simulation coordinator to tailor scenarios to the exact medications and procedures permitted in that specific jurisdiction.
The IDHS EMS Division maintains that high-fidelity simulation is one of the most effective ways to reduce errors in the field. By exposing responders to rare or complex medical situations in the lab, they are better prepared when those same situations occur on the streets of Indiana.
Following each session, participants are encouraged to provide feedback via email to help the IDHS refine its scenarios and maintain its status as one of the state’s most immersive training tools.
