Bedford man facing felony charges after traffic stop reveals warrant and narcotics

BEDFORD – A routine traffic patrol on Saturday morning led to the arrest of a local man on multiple drug-related charges and an outstanding warrant.

Michael “Shane” Nikirk, 51, of Bedford, was taken into custody on March 28, 2026, after a traffic stop at a local gas station uncovered methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Bedford Police Officer Clay Blackburn, the incident began at approximately 12:51 a.m. near 18th and L Streets. Officer Blackburn observed a blue Chevrolet Uplander traveling “abnormally slow.” A registration check of the vehicle revealed that the owner, Nikirk, had an active outstanding warrant for his arrest out of Jackson County.

Officer Blackburn initiated a traffic stop near 16th and H Streets. Nikirk pulled into the entrance of a Circle K gas station, effectively blocking the driveway for other motorists. He was immediately detained and placed in handcuffs after dispatch confirmed the Jackson County warrant.

While Nikirk’s vehicle was being prepared for impoundment, officers conducted a standard inventory of the SUV. During the search, Officer Blackburn located a black microfiber cloth bag on the front passenger seat containing a plastic baggy containing crystal meth, a glass smoking device with meth residue, a used syringe, and a digital scale.

Upon being questioned about the items, Nikirk reportedly admitted to investigators that he used the syringe to “shoot up” methamphetamine and confirmed the contents of the plastic bag. Police also discovered that Nikirk was driving with a suspended license, a status he claimed to be unaware of, stating he had recently received a new license in February.

Nikirk faces the following preliminary charges of possession of meth, unlawful possession of a syringe, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving while his driver’s license was suspended with a prior conviction and the Jackson County warrant.

Nikirk was transported to the Lawrence County Jail, where he was remanded into custody. His vehicle was towed from the scene, and all seized items were processed into evidence.
