Obituary: Michael “Mike” Lee Duncan

May 17, 1947 – March 29, 2026

Michael “Mike” Lee Duncan, 78, of Tell City, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones on March 29, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on May 17, 1947, in Lawrence County, Mike was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, husband, and friend to many, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and cherished memories.

Mike was the son of the late Henry Albert and Sophia Lou Duncan (Woods).  Throughout his life, Michael carried the values instilled in him by his parents: kindness, compassion, and an unwavering dedication to family.  On May 15, 1984, he married Sherry Duncan (Cummings).  Mike’s life was enriched by his family, who were the center of his world.

Mike’s career was marked by dedication, hard work, and a man of many talents. He dedicated 13 years of his career as a Maintenance worker at Smith Iron and Metal, followed by another 13 years at Bedford Recycling. His passion for auto mechanics was evident in the over 40 years he spent in his garage, where he found comfort and satisfaction in the hum of an engine.

In his leisure time, Mike found joy in simple pleasures. He loved fishing and mushroom hunting with his daughter, creating irreplaceable memories during their adventures. His grandson shared his fascination with trains, spending countless hours working on train sets, a bond that strengthened their relationship. Mike also enjoyed attending auctions with his grandson and friends, always in search of hidden treasures and shared laughter.  These pastimes brought him peace and provided many cherished memories shared with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry Duncan; loving daughter, Michelle(Jason) Abell; step-daughters, Cindy Baker, Jerrica (Bryan) Wilson, and  Patricia(Jack) Williams; grandson, Trent Duncan; granddaughter, Cheyenna Duncan; step grand-daughter, Jessica(Rickey) Spinks, who held a special place in his heart; as did his 10 great-grandchildren, who were his pride and joy. Mike also leaves behind two nieces and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Linda Gardner; brother, Jack Duncan; sons, Ronnie Lee Duncan and Kelly Gene Duncan; and grandson, Calvert Duncan.

Michael’s family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Heart to Heart Hospice for their compassionate care and support during his final days. Their kindness and dedication were a great comfort that has left a permanent mark on our hearts, reminding us of the profound impact of empathy and humanity.

Graveside service to celebrate Mike’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 3, at Freedom Cemetery, with John Pourner officiating.

Family and friends will gather to honor a man whose life was a testament of love for his family, hard work, and unwavering loyalty.  Though Mike has departed from this world to go fishing in heaven, he will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His spirit, marked by grace and resilience, will continue to inspire and guide his family and friends.
