GALENA – Floyd Central exploded for 12 runs in the second inning while thumping Bedford North Lawrence 20-2 in five innings during the season opener on Tuesday night.
The Highlanders, ranked No.22 in the Class 4A preseason poll, rocked the Stars with only seven hits (plus five walks and two hit batters) during the dozen-run frame. They added seven runs in the fourth.
BNL took an early lead with a runs in the first (Can Gates RBI double) and second (Reece Goodgame sacrifice fly).
E.J. Milliner blasted a three-run double to highlight the Floyd second. The Highlanders added five more hits during the fourth. Matt Polk was 3 for 3 and scored four runs, Lance Metz totaled four RBIs, and Jaxon Stone drove in three runs. Floyd also totaled 10 walks.
The Stars totaled five hits (by Gates, Riley Sons, Grayson Gillespie, Jackson Jones, and Grady Dalton).
“Not the start we had hoped for,” BNL coach Steven McNabb said. “We had some positive things early in the game, but it got away from us on the mound in the second and on. We knew the back end of our rotation was the biggest unknown. They all got a taste of it tonight.
”Now we learn and move forward. We have three games this week after two hard practices. We need to be ready to go.”
BNL will face West De Pere (from Michigan) on Friday, with the game set at Mitchell.
