Loogootee Fire Department receives $500 boost for safety education trailer

LOOGOOTEE The Loogootee Fire Department (LFD) is one step closer to modernizing its most vital community outreach tool, thanks to a recent $500 donation from The Mortgage Company of Southern Indiana, Incorporated.

The funds are earmarked for the repair and comprehensive upgrade of the department’s Fire Safety Education trailer, a mobile classroom that has been a staple of local safety efforts for over 15 years. The trailer is primarily used to provide hands-on emergency training to children, teaching them life-saving skills such as how to “stay low and go” during a fire and how to identify home hazards.

While the trailer has served the community reliably, its decade-and-a-half of service has left it in need of modernization. The LFD has outlined a three-phase improvement plan:

  • Exterior Branding: A new professional graphic wrap to make the unit more visible and engaging at community events.
  • Structural Safety: Installation of improved entry steps to ensure safer access for young children and those with mobility challenges.
  • Interior Remodel: A complete redesign of the interior learning space to enhance educational activities and simulate modern home environments more accurately.

Fire safety education saves lives, according to Darren C. Patterson, Broker and Owner of The Mortgage Company of Southern Indiana. This trailer helps firefighters teach families how to prevent fires and respond quickly in an emergency. Supporting the LFD is an investment in the safety of our entire community.

Fire safety trailers, often called “smoke houses,” are considered one of the most effective tools in rural fire prevention. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, hands-on learning in a controlled environment can increase a child’s retention of safety protocols by nearly 50% compared to classroom lectures alone.

In rural areas like Martin County, these trailers often serve a dual purpose, being shared with surrounding volunteer departments to provide consistent training across county lines.

As a volunteer-driven organization, the Loogootee Fire Department relies on community partnerships and annual fundraisers, such as the “Fire Run” and their community chili dinners, to maintain its equipment.
