MITCHELL — A Mitchell man has been charged with multiple felonies following an investigation into a violent domestic dispute that allegedly left a woman unconscious.
Steven Haste, 46 faces serious allegations including domestic battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated strangulation. The charges stem from an incident reported to the Mitchell Police Department in mid-January.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Officer Cody Grogan, the investigation began on January 4, 2026, when three individuals arrived at the Mitchell Police Station to report a battery that had occurred the previous day at a residence on South Meridian Road.
The female victim told police that her uncle, Steven Haste, choked her in his bedroom until she lost consciousness. She stated that when she regained consciousness, she was disoriented and “didn’t know where she was,” subsequently stumbling into a wall and a kitchen table
During the interview, officers observed physical evidence consistent with the victim’s account. She had a cut on the right side of her face. She alleged that Haste had cut her with a box cutter during the altercation. Responding officers noted bruising on the right side of the victim’s neck, consistent with the allegations of strangulation.
The victim’s mother and stepfather, provided supporting statements to investigators. The mother reported that she had been searching the home for her daughter for nearly 15 minutes before hearing a “loud noise” from Haste’s bedroom. She observed her daughter emerge from the room in a “dazed” state.
Her stepfather further alleged that he overheard Haste making inappropriate and derogatory sexual comments toward the female shortly before the physical confrontation took place.
Based on the evidence and witness statements, the officer requested an arrest warrant. Haste was detained on February 24.
Court records indicate that this incident follows a previous report from December 2025 involving the same family members, highlighting a history of domestic tension at the residence.
