Safety Alert: Toyo recalls popular open country tires over tread separation risk

INDIANA — Owners of light trucks and SUVs should check their wheels this week following a significant safety recall issued by Toyo Tire Holdings of Americas, Inc.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has published recall ID 26T005, warning that certain Toyo tires may suffer from tread separation, a defect that can lead to catastrophic tire failure and serious accidents.

The recall is specific to certain Open Country A/T III tires. Vehicle owners should check their sidewalls for the following sizes:

  • 265/70R18 116T
  • 265/60R20 115T

According to the NHTSA synopsis, the tread on these specific tires may detach from the casing while the vehicle is in motion.

Tread separation often leads to a sudden loss of tire pressure and immediate vehicle instability. At high speeds, this significantly increases the risk of a rollover or collision.

Toyo has announced that authorized dealers will replace the affected tires free of charge.

Official owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed out by April 1, 2026.

Owners who believe they are affected can contact Toyo Customer Service directly at 1-800-442-8696.

You can also use the NHTSA Recall Look-up Tool.by entering your tire brand and model to see if your specific set is included in the safety action.

Drivers are encouraged not to wait for the letter if they notice unusual vibrations or bulging in their tires and should seek an inspection immediately.
