Hoosier Homeowners: Applications now open for tornado safe room rebates

INDIANA With spring storm season on the horizon, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) has announced that applications are officially open for the Residential Safe Room Program.

Starting today, February 3, through February 28, 2026, Indiana residents can apply for a chance to receive a significant rebate on the installation of a pre-fabricated safe room. The program aims to help Hoosiers protect their families from the “near-absolute” threat of high-wind events and tornadoes.

Due to the high demand for these shelters, IDHS will utilize a random selection process to choose 33 applicants from the pool of entries.

For those selected, the financial incentive is substantial. If approved, homeowners will be reimbursed for 75% of their total installation costs, with a maximum rebate of $5,000.

To qualify for the rebate, safe rooms must be pre-fabricated and meet strict FEMA engineering standards. Because the program is funded via a FEMA grant, all participants must strictly adhere to federal grant regulations.

How to Apply

The application window is brief, closing at the end of the month. Interested homeowners should take the following steps:

  1. Visit the Portal: Navigate to the IDHS Residential Safe Room webpage to access the application.
  2. Submit by Deadline: Ensure your application is completed no later than February 28, 2026.
  3. Wait for Selection: Randomly selected winners will be notified after the application period closes.

While a safe room provides the ultimate protection during a direct hit, IDHS emphasizes that true safety begins with a plan. Experts encourage all residents to use this time to review their emergency strategies.

Preparing for severe weather is a priority for the state, according to IDHS. Whether you win the rebate or not, every household should have an emergency plan in place.
