Obituary: Eugene ‘Gene’ Prince


December 3, 1926 – January 29, 2026

Eugene “Gene” Prince, 99, of Heltonville, passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at his
residence with his family by his side.

Born December 3, 1926, in Monroe Co., he was the son of Opal and Vannie (Hillenburg) Prince. He married Elsie Harper on April 18, 1947, and she preceded him in death on May 21, 2019.

Gene spent his professional career as a mechanic at Indiana Limestone after 50 years of service. Throughout his life, he was an avid outdoors man and enjoyed mowing, gardening, and watching IU basketball games. He was deeply loved by his family and friends. He was an outstanding father and pap, and loved his children, grandsons, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter, Mona Hannum, of Bedford; a son, Tom Prince and wife, Vicki, of Heltonville; two grandsons, Alan Hannum, of Heltonville and Michael Prince and wife, Heather, of Bedford; four great- grandchildren, Jacob and wife, Hannah, Abigail and husband, Daylen, Evan and wife, Ava, and Isaiah, all of Bedford; a great-great-grandson, Paxton; four sisters, Rita Prince, Kay Olsen, Fay Phillips, and Susie Jones.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie; his parents and step- mother, Delores Prince; a sister, Margie Meadows, and five brothers, Hanford, Deward, Wendell, Robert, and Marion Prince.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, February 3rd in the Elmwood Chapel of Day & Carter Mortuary with Greg Eads officiating. Private burial will follow. Visitation will be from 11:00 am until the hour of service on Tuesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
