BNL wrestlers conclude season in sectional

BLOOMINGTON – Bedford North Lawrence concluded the boys wrestling season during action in the IHSAA sectional at Bloomington North on Saturday.

The top four in each weight class advanced to the regional. The Stars did not qualify for the next round of the state tournament series in any division.

“Our season did not end the way anyone had it scripted,” BNL coach Mike Branam said. “Today was a tough one for everyone to swallow, and it breaks my heart for these kids. To see Wyatt (Philpott at 138 pounds) end his career with an injury is heartbreaking. I know that pain personally and would not wish that in any young man.

“To watch everyone else’s season come to a close was hard. This was a tough season for us. We were a very young team and we took a few lumps this year, but I think we learned a lot this season and we matured a little as wrestlers. As tough as this year has been for these young men, I believe every one of them could still have stellar careers if they just keep pushing themselves and learning from the mistakes.”

Sectional qualifiers will compete in the regional at Bloomington South on Feb. 7.
