TRAVEL WARNING: Lawrence County moves to Red Status; Travel restricted to emergency personnel only

LAWRENCE CO. — Conditions have reached a critical point in Lawrence County. and surrounding counties. Effective immediately, the Lawrence County Commissioners have elevated the county to a Red Travel Status, the highest and most restrictive level of travel advisory in the state of Indiana.

This Warning level indicates that local roads have become impassable or life-threatening due to the ongoing severe winter storm.

Strict Travel Restrictions in Place

Under a Red Travel Status, a travel Warning is in effect. This is a significant escalation from the previous “Orange” status. The following restrictions now apply:

  • Emergency Personnel Only: Travel is strictly restricted to Emergency Service Employees, Emergency Responders, and Utility Workers who are actively engaged in maintaining public safety or restoring essential services.
  • Essential Workers Not Exempt: Officials have clarified that this restriction is absolute. Unlike previous levels, this does not include “essential” workers such as retail, bank, or general service employees.
  • Strict Enforcement: Law enforcement officers are authorized to issue tickets and citations to any non-emergency motorists found on the roadways.

A Message from Officials

The Commissioners emphasize that this measure is necessary to protect lives and allow emergency crews to reach those in need. Individuals are directed to:

  1. Refrain from all travel until the status is downgraded.
  2. Comply with all emergency measures and cooperate with public officials.
  3. Obey the directions of law enforcement officers.

Dangerous Conditions Persist

The move to Red status comes as heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures continue to grip south-central Indiana. With wind chills reaching -25°F, any mechanical failure or accident on the road could quickly become a fatal situation.

Residents should remain indoors and ensure they have a way to receive emergency alerts. Power companies are currently working through these hazardous conditions to address outages caused by the high winds and heavy snow accumulation.
