Obituary: Twila Jean Wease

August 11, 1933 – January 16, 2026

Twila Jean Wease, 92, of Mitchell, passed away Friday, January 16, 2026, at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born August 11, 1933, in Martin County, she was the daughter of Catherine (Hammersley) and Harold Grissom.  She married Wendell Wease on January 26, 1975 and he preceded her in death March 6, 2023.

Twila traveled extensively and held many jobs throughout her life. She lived and worked in Okinawa, Maine, Mississippi, and Indiana. She retired from the Naval Weapons Support Center in Crane, Indiana, after 34 years of civil service, 32 of those at Crane, where she served as a Department Secretary. She later worked for a short time at the gate at West Boggs Park.

After retirement, Twila and her husband, Wendell, enjoyed traveling in their fifth-wheel camper and spent time living in Florida, Texas, and New Mexico.

The greatest joy of Twila’s life was her daughter, Mary, who passed away in 2017 at the age of 49. Twila often said she was always so proud whenever Mary received a promotion—she felt as though she had received one, too.

She is survived by her sisters Janice Lane of Bedford, Dora Bex of Greenwood, and Sandra Hudson of Bedford; her brother, Clifford (Betty) Grissom of Mitchell; her son-in-law, John Feathers of Bloomfield; sons Tony Wease of Loogootee and Terry (Jane) Wease of Corydon; daughters Marsha (Lawrence) Kirkland of Newport News, VA, and Theresa Fuhrman of Shoals. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Kris (Danielle) Wease and Michele (Joe) Quinn of Loogootee; Kim (Bill) Bates of Carmel; Jay (Michelle) Kingsley of Hampton, VA; Rachel Wease of Astoria, NY; Bonnie Wease of North Hollywood, CA; and Chelsi Feathers of Bloomfield; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, and her pets Kit and Jake.

Twila was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Wease Feathers; her parents; her husband, Wendell Lee Wease; her brothers, Tony Grissom and Mark Grissom; her sisters, Elizabeth Grissom and Rita Grissom; her son-in-law, Roger Fuhrman; her daughter-in-law, Judy Wease; and her grandsons, Matthew Fuhrman and Kevin Colvin.

The family offers special gratitude to her long-term caregivers Rebecca Keefe and Misty Moore.

Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 21, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Minister Jim Nichols officiating.  Burial will be at Burns City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 20, and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
