BNL wrestlers finish 7th in HHC

JEFFERSONVILLE – Bedford North Lawrence finished seventh during the Hoosier Hills Conference wrestling meet on Saturday.

The Stars totaled 25 points. Columbus East won the team title with 291.5 points.

BNL’s best finishes came from Rhys Friend (106 pounds) and Ian Fish (165). Both finished fifth in their weight classes.

”Today was another rough day for us,” BNL coach Mike Branam said. “The conference tournament is always tough, but it is especially tough when you are a freshman or sophomore. We came in with the goal of wrestling better than we have been, and I think we accomplished that.

“Fundamentally, we looked better, but we made some small mistakes, and when you are wrestling competition at this level, small mistakes can ruin your day. And that is what happened to us.”

Fish recorded the only win on the mat for the Stars as he conquered Jennings County’s Thiago Severi by an 11-2 major decision in the fifth-place match.

”Ian wrestled tough competition, but showed a lot of potential by digging deep in his final match to pull ahead and not relinquish the lead,” Branam said. “Every guy today showed improvement. It didn’t pay off today, but they will benefit from it in the long run.”

BNL will host North Knox on Thursday.
