Storyline

Jason Chrapek is a clinical assistant professor in the College of Health and Human Sciences’ Department of Health and Kinesiology at Purdue University. In this video, he explains why it is important to remain active during winter and what people can do to safely exercise in the cold during the new year. Getting more exercise is a common New Year’s resolution. Chrapek recommends starting to exercise now to build momentum as people continue into 2026. Additionally, staying physically active during cold and flu season is a good way to boost the immune system. Exercise can also be helpful for fighting seasonal depression, since physical activity releases mood-boosting hormones called endorphins. During colder days, working out in a gym or attending an exercise class is a good indoor activity. For outdoor exercise, Chrapek recommends wearing warm, moisture-wicking clothing and drinking lots of water.
