BEDFORD — A Bedford man was arrested after deputies served a warrant and discovered suspected drugs during a search of a residence Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

Joshua Byrd, 43, was taken into custody around 3:15 p.m. on Jan. 11 when deputies responded to the 30 block of Indian Street to apprehend him on an active misdemeanor warrant, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Deputy Michael Martin said Byrd exited the residence upon officers’ arrival and was informed of the warrant. He was taken into custody without incident. While speaking with Byrd on the front porch, deputies reported detecting the odor of marijuana coming from inside the residence.
A search of Byrd was conducted, leading to the discovery of a small black bag in his pocket containing a glass smoking device and a plastic bag containing a crystal-like substance. The substance later tested positive for methamphetamine, police said.
Based on the findings and the odor coming from the residence, deputies obtained a search warrant and searched the home. During that search, deputies located additional smoking devices, plastic bags, a mason jar containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana, and two pills identified as a prescription legend drug, according to the affidavit.
Byrd was transported to the Lawrence County Jail without incident. He faces charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, and possession of a legend drug.
Deputies involved in the investigation included Martin, Sgt. Robin Compton, Deputy Augustus Hogan, and Deputy Braydon Letsinger.
Those arrested are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
