NHTSA issues major recall alerts: Volvo EX30 fire risk, Audi camera glitches, and BMW airbags

INDIANA – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released a series of critical safety recalls affecting thousands of vehicles ranging from luxury sedans to electric SUVs and school buses.

The most urgent alerts include a “park outside” warning for specific Volvo electric vehicles and a massive rearview camera failure affecting nearly the entire modern Audi lineup.

High-Priority Safety Alerts

Volvo: EX30 Fire Risk (Recall 26V001)

Volvo has issued a “Park Outside” warning for 2025 EX30 owners due to a high-voltage battery fire risk. A manufacturing defect can cause the battery to short circuit and overheat.

Owners are urged to park away from structures and limit charging to a maximum of 70% until a remedy is available.

Audi: Mass Rearview Camera Failure (Recall 25V900)

Volkswagen Group is recalling over 350,000 Audi vehicles because the rearview camera image may fail to display, significantly increasing the risk of a back-over accident.

  • Models: Includes 2019–2026 models of the A6, A7, A8, Q7, Q8, e-tron, e-tron GT, and their “S” and “RS” performance variants.
  • Fix: Dealers will provide a free software update.

BMW: Airbag Inflator Ruptures (Recall 25V871)

Continuing the long-running industry struggle with defective airbags, BMW is recalling 2014–2015 2-Series, 3-Series, and 4-Series models. In a crash, the inflator may rupture, sending metal fragments into the cabin.

Passenger Vehicle & SUV Recalls

  • Rivian R1S & R1T (2022–2025): Over 12,000 vehicles are being recalled because a rear toe link joint may separate, causing a loss of steering control. Rivian is aware of at least one accident related to this issue.
  • Subaru Forester (2026): The brand-new Forester is facing a recall for rear hatch support brackets that may fail, causing the heavy liftgate to fall unexpectedly.
  • Chevrolet Equinox EV (2025–2026): These EVs may be too quiet at low speeds, failing to meet federal pedestrian warning sound standards (FMVSS 141).
  • Nissan Rogue (2026): A small number of units were shipped with the incorrect spare tire, which could affect vehicle handling if used.

Commercial & Special Use Vehicles

  • Blue Bird Electric School Buses (2019–2027): A loose 12-volt cable in All American and Vision electric buses can cause a total loss of drive power while the bus is in motion.
  • Tiffin Motorhomes (2025–2026): Open Trail models are under recall for a wiring defect between the battery and inverter that could lead to overheating and fire.
  • TICO Pro Spotter (2018–2026): These terminal tractors face a loss of steering control due to potential track rod detachment.

Motorcycle Recalls

  • Honda: Multiple models, including the CBR600RR (2024-2026) and CB1000SP (2025), are being recalled for engine rod bearing failures that could cause the engine to stall or seize.
  • KTM: 390 Adventure and Enduro models (2025) have side stand springs that may break, potentially allowing the stand to drop while riding.
