New Albany wrestlers power past Stars

NEW ALBANY – New Albany powered to a 72-12 victory over Bedford North Lawrence during boys high school wrestling action on Tuesday night.

The Stars won only two matches. Ian Fish pinned Johny Fisher at 165 pounds, and Reece Ritter topped Kyler Scott at 215.

”New Albany is a good team that came out strong and aggressive,” BNL coach Mike Branam said. “We, for some reason, came out a little flat. Every mistake we made, they were ready to capitalize on it, and we just couldn’t adjust fast enough to keep up.”

“Ian and Reece did a good job. They both controlled their matches and found a way to win. Several others were wrestling well, but made simple mistakes that the New Albany kids caught us on. That stinks, but we will see these guys again the next two weekends. We just need to make some adjustments so we will be ready for them, if the opportunity for a rematch presents itself.”

The Bulldogs posted six wins by pins.

“I have always told my athletes that one of the greatest qualities of a champion is a short memory,” Branam said. “When things don’t go our way, we have to learn from it, let it motivate us, and then leave it behind us, because the most important match is our next one.

”All we can do is take a good look at what we need to do differently to get us back into the mindset that we had on Saturday. It is not uncommon for a young team to lack consistency and to stumble, but we must find a way to correct it, learn from it, and get ready for our next opponent.”

BNL will visit Mitchell on Thursday.
