Casey Brown sentenced to 111 years for 2023 murder and rampage

BEDFORD — A Lawrence County man will likely spend the remainder of his life behind bars following a high-profile sentencing hearing on Tuesday. Lawrence County Superior Court Judge Robert Cline sentenced Casey Brown to a total of 111 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections, with no time suspended.

The sentencing follows Brown’s conviction on November 17, 2025, where a jury found him guilty of murder, attempted murder, and criminal confinement.

The charges stem from a violent sequence of events involving those closest to Brown. According to court records and statements from the prosecution, Brown’s rampage resulted in the death of Kobe Stancombe.

The investigation revealed a harrowing scene in which Brown, murdered Stancombe attempted to murder Stancombe’s fiancé and criminally confined his lifelong friend Bradley Harper.

Following the attacks, Brown attempted to take his own life but survived to stand trial. While a specific motive was a central point of the multi-day trial, prosecutors painted a picture of a domestic situation that escalated into “unthinkable violence.”

The State of Indiana was represented by Chief Deputy Prosecutor Joshua K. Scherschel and Senior Deputy Prosecutor Sarah Cummings. During the hearing, Scherschel emphasized the permanence of the sentence, noting that Brown will now face the consequences of his actions for the rest of his life.

Prosecutor Samuel Arp issued a statement following the judge’s decision, praising the inter-agency cooperation that led to the conviction.

“After a lengthy delay and a multi-day trial, Casey Brown finally receives the sentence he deserves,” Arp said. “This office will continue to prosecute and do our very best to remove the criminal element from this county, one offender at a time.”

The successful prosecution was the result of an extensive investigation involving several local and state agencies, including the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police, Lawrence County Coroner’s Office, French Lick and Orleans Police Departments.

Brown was represented by public defenders Patrick Smith and Daniel Dixon.
