BEDFORD – As students prepare for the upcoming winter recess, North Lawrence Community Schools (NLCS) is taking proactive steps to support families who may face food insecurity while school is out of session.

The NLCS Food Service Office released a letter, outlining several critical resources available to ensure children continue to receive well-balanced nutrition in the absence of reliable school meals.
“Winter break can be a difficult time for families facing food insecurity,” stated Bonnie Sanders, Director of Food Services for NLCS stated in the letter. “To ensure that children receive a full and well-balanced diet… here are some resources to help fill the nutritional gap”.
The school corporation highlighted several digital and community-based tools for families in need:
- Community Compass App: Families can download this app to locate free groceries, prepared meals, SNAP stores, and WIC clinics in their immediate area.
- Indiana 211: By dialing 211 or visiting the Indiana 211 website, residents can be connected to local resources ranging from food pantries to housing assistance.
- Feeding Indiana’s Hungry: Parents are encouraged to use the “Find Your Food Bank” map available at feedingindianashungry.org.
- National Hunger Hotline: The USDA’s hotline is available at 1-866-348-6479 for those seeking immediate meal resources.
