Mitchell man tampers with vehicle and is arrested on multiple charges

MITCHELL — A local man is in custody following a series of early morning incidents on December 18, 2025, that led to the discovery of illegal narcotics during jail booking.

The investigation began at approximately 5:07 a.m. when Officer Jacob McMillen of the Mitchell Police Department received reports of a suspicious individual attempting to enter a vehicle on North 5th Street. Using descriptions from home security footage, officers located Stevie A. King, 21, at the corner of Sheeks Drive and Hancock Avenue.

Upon contact, King appeared impaired and admitted to entering a white Ford Bronco on West Hancock Avenue, falsely claiming he was interested in purchasing it. The owner of the residence later confirmed he did not know King and noted that the vehicle’s interior had been ransacked and the door lock damaged.

While investigating the scene, officers recovered a backpack belonging to King from inside the Ford Bronco. Additionally, security footage from a second location showed King tampering with the engine compartment and passenger door of a red Ford Fusion.

King was detained and transported to the Lawrence County Jail. During the booking process, jail staff searched King’s backpack and allegedly discovered a silicon container with a substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine and fentanyl, and a glass smoking device with burnt residue.

King has been remanded to the Lawrence County Jail on several preliminary charges, including trafficking with an inmate, possession of meth and a narcotic drug, unauthorized entry to a motor vehicle, public intoxication, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
