Fatal head-on collision shuts down State Road 46 in Ellettsville; Two dead, three injuried

ELLETTSVILLE — A tragic head-on collision claimed two lives and sent three others to the hospital late Thursday night in Monroe County.

According to the Ellettsville Police Department, emergency crews responded to reports of a serious crash just before 9:00 p.m. on West State Road 46, near the intersection of North Cypress Lane.

A preliminary investigation by crash reconstruction teams indicates that a Chevrolet sedan was traveling westbound on SR 46 when, for reasons still under investigation, it crossed the center line into the eastbound lanes. The sedan then struck an oncoming Jeep head-on.

The impact was devastating the occupants of the Chevrolet Sedan were pronounced dead at the scene, Three occupants in a Jeep were rescued from the vehicle and transported to a Bloomington hospital for treatment. Police state they are currently in stable condition.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been released, as officers are working to complete next-of-kin notifications.

Following the collision, State Road 46 was closed for several hours as investigators worked to reconstruct the scene and clear debris. The highway has since been reopened to traffic.

Local authorities are now looking for additional information to piece together the moments leading up to the crossover.

The Ellettsville Police Department is urging anyone who may have witnessed the accident or who possesses dashcam footage of the area from Thursday night to come forward.
