Lawrence County Veterans urged to file for property tax deductions before year-end deadline

BEDFORD— As the 2025 calendar year draws to a close, Lawrence County Veterans Affairs Officer Brad Bough is issuing a final call during the commissioners meeting this morning for local disabled veterans to apply for valuable property tax deductions.

The state of Indiana offers significant financial relief for those who have served in the Armed Forces, with potential deductions from the assessed value of a primary residence. However, to see these benefits reflected on next year’s tax bill, applications must be submitted by the end of December.

“Veterans who have not filed need to do so before the end of the year,” said Brad Bough. “Our staff is available to help and will be open on December 30 for walk-in appointments only.”

Failure to file by the deadline may result in the loss of thousands of dollars in potential savings for the upcoming tax cycle.

Eligibility is strictly defined by the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs (IDVA) based on three primary factors:

  • Honorable Discharge: Must have received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • Disability Rating: A service-connected disability rating of at least 10%, as determined by the VA.
  • Wartime Service Windows: Including WWII (1941–1946), Korea (1950–1955), Vietnam (1964–1975), and the Gulf War (1990–Present).

Surviving spouses of eligible veterans, as well as those whose spouses were killed in action or died while serving on active duty, are also encouraged to apply.

To apply, veterans must visit the Veterans Affair Office. Brad Bough and his staff are available to assist in navigating the paperwork to ensure all requirements are met.

Required Documentation:

  1. State Form 12662: The primary application for disabled veterans and surviving spouses.
  2. VA Summary Letter: Must verify service dates, wartime service, and combined disability rating.
  3. State Form 51186: A certificate of eligibility that must be signed by the IDVA or a County Veteran Service Officer.
