Obituary: Ned Boyer Sr.

March 24, 1933-December 12, 2025

Edward ‘Ned’ M. Boyer, son of the late Carl D. and Helen M. Boyer, was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on March 24, 1933. He went to be with the Lord on Friday, December 12, 2025. He was 92 years old.

Ned met MaryNell Dickinson, and it was love at first sight. After a very short courtship, they were married on December 26, 1959, and she survives.

He graduated from Bedford High School, where he played varsity basketball for four years and baseball, and was a member of the class of 1951, of which he was president. He proceeded to Purdue University, where he also played varsity basketball for four years. He was a member of Iron Key and president of his graduating class of 1955.

Ned was a member of the Free Methodist Church for 53 years, where he taught Sunday School and led the youth group for many years, and served in many other positions.

Ned was a past president of the Kiwanis Club. He led the Dollars for Scholarship program and was instrumental in building the dressing rooms at the Parkview School football field. Ned was very active with the Christian Businessmen’s Club and helped bring many evangelists to Bedford.

He was a coach at Williams High School from 1955 to 1957 and led the team to county titles. He dearly loved the youth. He then became coach at Bedford High School from 1957-1959. As his three boys and daughter became involved in sports and activities, he never missed a game or an event. He dearly loved his children. He was later employed by American United Life Insurance Company (now OneAmerica) for 63 years. Ned loved people and selling insurance. He never met a stranger.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years MaryNell of Bedford; his children, Greg Boyer (Barb), and Angela Upchurch (Chuck); a daughter-in-law, Amy Boyer; 13 grandchildren: Liza Easley (Edward), Doug Boyer (Holly), Patrick Boyer(Sara), Bridget Crenshaw (Clay), David Boyer, Hope Boyer, Luke Boyer, Ellie Boyer, Kiersten Boyer, Marissa Boyer(Cretia), Chase Falcone (Abby), Darcy Snyder (Zach), and Aspen Falcone; 10 great-grandchildren: Jack Easley, Miller Easley, Henry Easley, Hayes Boyer, William Boyer, Ben Boyer, McBride Boyer, Margo Boyer, Francie Boyer, Pratt Crenshaw; three nephews: Scott Boyer, Steve Boyer, and Brett Boyer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Ned Boyer, Jr, and Mark David Boyer, a brother, Carl D. Boyer, Jr., his in-laws, Bob and Maxine Dickinson, and a brother-in-law, Gary Dickinson.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, December 19, 2025, at the Free Methodist Church in Bedford, with Pastor Adam Strauser officiating. Burial will follow in the Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Military rites will be accorded by members of the American Legion Gillen Post #33. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Friday at the church.
