MARTINSVILLE – A violent confrontation during a reported home invasion in rural Morgan County on Monday has left a police dog injured and the male suspect hospitalized.
The incident, which occurred near Patton Lake on Belt Lane, resulted in deputies firing upon the armed intruder after he severely assaulted the police dog.
The injured K-9, named Bullet, is reported to be in stable condition and is recovering from his injuries, which include a fractured sinus bone and two broken teeth.

The confrontation began when a homeowner, who was monitoring their property remotely, contacted 911 after observing an unknown individual breaking into their residence via a security camera.
Morgan County deputies quickly responded to the home on Belt Lane. Upon arrival, they confirmed signs of forced entry. The suspect, who was inside the house, reportedly refused commands from the deputies to exit the structure.
To attempt an apprehension, K-9 Bullet was deployed into the residence. The situation rapidly escalated when the suspect violently attacked the police dog.
The man struck the K-9 multiple times in the head with a large object, which was later identified as a pair of tree-cutting loppers, knocking the dog unconscious.
In response to the severe assault on K-9 Bullet, deputies discharged both lethal rounds and non-lethal bean bag rounds, striking the suspect.
The unidentified male suspect was injured and immediately airlifted to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was listed in stable condition as of Tuesday afternoon. Authorities have not yet released his identity or details on any potential connection he may have to the homeowner.
The Bullett was rushed to an emergency veterinary clinic. Despite the violent attack, he is reported to be “alert” and “neurologically intact,” though he sustained a fractured front sinus bone and two broken teeth.
One deputy sustained a minor injury after slipping on the ice at the scene.
As is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting, the deputies involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave while the event is investigated. Body camera footage from the scene is currently being reviewed as part of the ongoing inquiry.
