BEDFORD — A Bedford man is in custody after attempting to flee officers who arrived at his residence to serve multiple active arrest warrants. This incident subsequently led to the discovery of illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia.
Shawn A. Daniels, 38, was taken into custody on December 4th and is facing new preliminary charges, including resisting law enforcement by fleeing, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a narcotic drug, and drug paraphernalia, in addition to being held on two existing felony warrants.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Bedford Police Officer Steven Hatton Jr., BPD officers arrived at Mr. Daniels’ residence at approximately 7:07 p.m. to serve outstanding arrest warrants.
After confirming Daniels’ ownership of a vehicle parked outside, Officer Hatton and Officer Jones approached the front door. Officer Jones recognized Daniels from his driver’s license photo as he answered the door.
When Officer Hatton asked Daniels to step outside, Daniels reportedly advised that he needed to grab something, slammed the door shut, and fled into the residence. Officers pursued Daniels as he ran into a back bedroom, where he was observed bending down beside the bed before positioning himself behind the bedroom door.
Daniels eventually complied with commands to surrender, was placed in handcuffs, and transported to the Lawrence County Jail.
During a search incident to arrest, officers located illegal items, prompting a formal search of the residence.
Following the initial arrest and search, Officer Bell used his canine partner, Castiel, to conduct a free-air sniff of Daniels’ locked vehicle parked in front of the residence.
The K9 provided a primary alert to the odor of narcotics at the driver’s side door. The vehicle was towed to the Bedford Police Department’s secured lot so that officers could apply for a search warrant for the vehicle.
Daniels was placed in the custody of the Lawrence County Jail.
All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This article is based on the information provided in the probable cause affidavit and does not represent a final determination of guilt or innocence.
