INDIANA – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a widespread Class II recall affecting more than 200,000 cases of shredded mozzarella and various cheese blends due to the potential presence of metal fragments. The recalled products, manufactured by Ohio-based Great Lakes Cheese Co., were distributed to major retailers across 31 states including Indiana and Puerto Rico, including Aldi, Publix, Target, and Walmart.

The recall has been designated as a Class II event by the FDA, which means that while the issue is serious, the consumption of the product is categorized as having a probability of causing “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences” or where the probability of serious consequences is remote. The contamination reportedly stems from the supplier’s raw material.
While the FDA report did not indicate any confirmed injuries to date, consumers are strongly advised to check their refrigerators and immediately discontinue use of the affected products.
The recall impacts multiple shredded cheese products sold under various private-label and retail brands. Consumers should check for products with sell-by dates through February and March 2026. Specific UPC codes and batch numbers can be found on the full FDA enforcement report.
