BEDFORD– A routine traffic stop conducted by a Bloomington District Trooper on Monday evening, December 1 quickly escalated, resulting in the arrest of three individuals—a Bloomington man, a Mitchell woman, and a Bedford woman—on various drug-related charges.
The incident began when Trooper Ben Burris of the Indiana State Police, while patrolling in Bedford, observed a 2011 white Mazda CX-7 traveling above the posted speed limit. Trooper Burris initiated a traffic stop, and the driver, identified as Marlo M. Hurt, 55, of Mitchell, pulled into the parking lot of an abandoned building near the intersection of 16th and G Streets.
Immediately upon stopping, the rear driver-side door of the Mazda opened, and a male passenger, later identified as Tanner Lewis Hurt, 27, of Bloomington, fled the scene on foot.

“During the foot chase, Trooper Burris observed Tanner Hurt throwing a backpack he was wearing as he ran down the sidewalk,” officials reported.
Trooper Burris successfully apprehended Hurt as he attempted to jump a chain link fence. It was also discovered that Tanner Hurt was wanted on an active arrest warrant from Lawrence County.
Troopers Jesse Crane and Caleb Sipes arrived to assist with the stop and subsequent investigation. Trooper Crane located the discarded backpack, which was found to contain several drug-related items, including:
- Multiple plastic bags containing a total of 3 grams of a crystal substance believed to be methamphetamine.
- Paraphernalia with burnt plant material.
- Multiple used hypodermic syringes and other drug-related paraphernalia.
A search of the Mazda also resulted in the seizure of a digital scale with white crystal residue, additional paraphernalia, and multiple used hypodermic syringes.
Following the investigation, all three occupants were arrested and transported to the Lawrence County Jail.
Tanner Lewis Hurt, 27, of Bloomington, was charged with possession of meth, unlawful possession of a syringe, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Teegan Marie Ray-Burton, 22, of Bedford, a passenger, was charged with possession of meth, unlawful possession of a syringe, trafficking with an inmate, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
The driver Marlo M. Hurt, 55, of Mitchell, was issued a summons for possession of marijuana.
