LAWRENCE CO.— As winter weather approaches, bringing the threat of snow, sleet, and ice, Lawrence County officials are stressing the critical need for motorists to prepare for hazardous road conditions. The warning comes with a free, comprehensive guide to safe winter driving practices from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.

Lawrence County Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer addressed the commissioners at Tuesday morning’s meeting, highlighting sobering statistics on winter-related crashes.

“Whether it’s snow, sleet or ice, winter weather can cause extremely dangerous road conditions,” Luchauer stated. “Preparing yourself – and your vehicle – for winter weather is key.”
The data underscores the severity of the risk: in 2023, there were an estimated 101,390 police-reported traffic crashes that occurred during snow or sleet conditions, resulting in 320 fatal crashes and an estimated 22,293 injury crashes.
Essential Safety Tips
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has released a guide, “Driving in Winter Weather: The Basics,” focused on public safety and awareness.
On the Road: Slow Down and Keep Your Distance
- Slow Down: It takes significantly longer to control or stop a vehicle on slick surfaces.
- Increase Following Distance: Give yourself ample time to stop for vehicles ahead.
- Avoid Snow Plows: Do not crowd or travel beside a snow plow. They travel slowly, make wide turns, stop often, and overlap lanes. Maintain a safe distance and pass with extreme caution.
Vehicle Prep: Tires, Battery, and Wipers
- Tires are Crucial: Cold temperatures drop tire pressure. Check tire pressure monthly when tires are “cold” (undriven for at least 3 hours) and inflate to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure (found on the driver’s side door frame). Check tread depth, aiming for at least 2/32 of an inch, and inspect for cuts, cracks, or bulges. Consider installing snow tires for added traction.
- Check Battery Power: Have a mechanic check your battery, charging system, and belts, as cold weather severely reduces battery power. Electric vehicle owners should keep their batteries charged and plugged in overnight to maintain optimal temperature and range.
- Visibility is Key: Ensure headlights, brake lights, and turn signals are working. Fill the windshield wiper reservoir with high-quality “winter” fluid with de-icer, and replace worn wiper blades.
Child Passenger Safety
Parents should be mindful of how winter gear interacts with car seats. Heavy winter coats can prevent a snug harness fit. Officials recommend using thin, warm layers and placing blankets around the child after the harness is properly secured. Always verify that car seats and booster seats are correctly installed and appropriate for the child’s age and size.
Emergency Kit and Planning
Before heading out, stock your vehicle with essential supplies:
- Snow shovel, broom, and ice scraper.
- Abrasive material (sand or kitty litter) for traction.
- Jumper cables, flashlight, flares, and a first aid kit.
- Blankets, water, non-perishable food, and necessary medicine.
- Keep your gas tank near full.
- Check weather and traffic reports and postpone non-essential travel if conditions are poor.
If You Get Stranded
If you are stopped or stalled, stay with your car, avoid overexertion, and make your car visible with bright markers or by keeping the dome light on.
Crucially, be mindful of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Ensure your exhaust pipe is clear of snow, and only run your car sporadically—just long enough to stay warm. Never run the car for long periods with the windows up or in an enclosed space.
Download the App for Critical Alerts
Director Luchauer strongly encouraged residents to utilize the free Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office mobile app, available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

“They will receive weather updates fast before seeing it or hearing it on television,” Luchauer noted.
The app is a vital public safety tool, providing residents with instant weather and public safety updates, access to the public Sex & Violent Offender Registry, and the ability to submit tips.
