Indiana’s new Blackout license plate generates over $2.3 million in the first three months

INDIANA — The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) announced Friday that its recently launched Blackout license plate has become an instant hit, with approximately 70,000 plates issued in its first three months of availability.

The sleek, special recognition plate, introduced on August 8, has already generated more than $2.3 million in revenue, which will be reinvested into the agency. This high demand now places the Blackout plate in competition with some of the BMV’s highest-selling Special Group Recognition plates.

Indiana BMV Commissioner Kevin Garvey highlighted the plate’s success as offering drivers appealing choices for vehicle personalization.

“The Blackout plate is proving to be a popular option, and the numbers prove it,” Garvey said in a press release. “I want all Hoosier drivers to know that the Blackout plate is an option for not only their cars, but trucks, motorcycles, and RVs too. Many of our customers want a plate that matches and complements other style choices on their vehicle.”

Disability Option Coming in 2026

The BMV confirmed that the plate’s popularity will lead to increased availability. Starting in 2026, the agency plans to offer the Blackout design as an option for disability plates.

Hoosier drivers who wish to purchase the plate can select the design:

  • In person at any BMV branch.
  • Online through the official BMV website.
  • At a BMV Connect Kiosk.

The cost of the Indiana Blackout license plate is an additional $45, in addition to the standard registration fee.

This specialty fee is charged at the time of initial registration and at every annual renewal. According to the BMV, $34 of this fee is reinvested into the agency for technology upgrades.

Optional Personalized License Plate (PLP) Fee: An additional $45.00 if you choose custom lettering.

Replacement Fee (If applicable):$9.50

This fee is only charged if you choose to replace your current license plate with the Blackout design before your current plate expires. This replacement must be completed at a BMV branch.
