Indiana launches Safe Family Travel campaign to combat holiday traffic fatalities

INDIANA – Indiana is mobilizing law enforcement across the state for a major traffic safety initiative to protect travelers and prevent fatal crashes throughout the holiday season. The campaign, known as Safe Family Travel, officially begins on November 26 and runs through the end of December.

The effort is a partnership supported by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Police officers will be working overtime to focus on three key dangerous behaviors: impaired driving, aggressive driving, and seat belt violations.

To deter reckless behavior, motorists can expect to see an increased law enforcement presence, including sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols.

According to NHTSA data, these measures are critical because alcohol-impaired driving is consistently a leading cause of fatal crashes during the holiday season. Furthermore, the failure to wear a seat belt remains one of the most preventable causes of death on the road.

“We see the consequences of unsafe driving every day,” said Douglas Huntsinger, executive director of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. “By buckling up, slowing down, and never driving impaired, we can all help make Indiana’s roads safer this season.”

The ICJI and NHTSA urge all Hoosiers to commit to safe driving practices as they travel to celebrate with family and friends:

  • Never Drive Impaired: Plan by using a designated driver, taxi, or rideshare service if you plan to drink any alcohol.
  • Always Buckle Up: Indiana law requires all drivers and passengers to wear a seat belt. Additionally, children under 8 years old must be properly secured in a child safety seat.
  • Focus on Driving: Follow the speed limit, stay alert, and avoid all distractions, especially phone use.
  • Report Unsafe Drivers: If you spot an impaired or unsafe driver, call 911 immediately.

The Safe Family Travel campaign aims to ensure that everyone makes it home safely as the year comes to a close.
