Stars, Eagles battle to deadlock in scrimmage

BNL’s Parker Kern scored 8 points during the IHSAA sanctioned scrimmage at Austin on Tuesday night.

AUSTIN – Bedford North Lawrence completed its public preseason work, battling to a 38-38 deadlock with Austin during the IHSAA sanctioned scrimmage on Tuesday night.

Dax Short paced the Stars with 20 points while Parker Kern totaled 8.

“It was good to go against somebody else,” BNL coach Jackson Ryan said. “They brought a level of physicality.”

Austin ended the first quarter, played with strictly man-to-man defense, with a 13-9 edge, although BNL drew nine fouls (free throws were not awarded until the final minute). After struggling to a 6-6 stalemate in the second quarter with zone defenses, the Stars posted a 16-6 edge in the third when allowed to press and defend full court.

“We really moved the ball well,” Ryan said. “I was impressed defensively, turning that into easy offense during that quarter.”

Micah Mohler totaled 17 points for the Eagles.

”We have so many things, basic and fundamental needs, to work on,” Ryan said. “We have two varsity players that haven’t played a competitive game in a couple of years. Understanding the flow of the game, there’s a lot of growth we need to do. There are so many situations, even after tonight, we haven’t seen yet and need to talk through. We need to be as prepared as possible.”

BNL will visit Bloomington North for the 2025-26 season opener on Nov. 25.
