INDIANA – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced a significant round of safety recalls affecting a broad range of vehicles, from heavy-duty trucks and school buses to popular consumer SUVs and pickups from major manufacturers such as Toyota, GM, and Stellantis (including Ram/Jeep).
The recalls address critical safety concerns, including engine failures, loss of vehicle control, and non-deploying airbags.
Major Safety Concerns Highlighted
- Engine Failure Risk for Toyota and Lexus: Toyota is recalling approximately 127,000 2022-2024 Toyota Tundra and Lexus LX models, as well as the 2024 Lexus GX. The issue stems from manufacturing debris that may contaminate the V35A engine, causing the main bearings to fail, which can result in an engine stall and loss of drive power.
- Loss of Truck Control for Freightliner and Western Star: Daimler Trucks North America, LLC is recalling numerous heavy-duty truck models, including the 2020-2026 Freightliner 108SD, 114SD, Business Class M2, and various Western Star models. The concern (NHTSA ID: 25V760) is that loose axle clamp fasteners could cause the axle to shift, leading to a dynamic thrust angle misalignment and loss of vehicle control.
- Fire Risk for Jeep Plug-in Hybrids: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2023-2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe and 2024-2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe models due to a risk of engine failure, which may cause a fire or loss of drive power.
- Air Bag Failures on GM and Ram Models:
- Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling 2021-2022 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 vehicles where the driver’s airbag may not deploy as intended in a crash.
- General Motors, LLC is recalling 2026 GMC Hummer EV Pickup and SUV models because the front passenger air bag may fail to deploy. GM also issued a separate recall for the 2014 Buick Verano and Chevrolet Cruze roof rail air bag inflators that may rupture.
School and Transit Bus Safety Issues
Several recalls concern passenger safety in school and transit vehicles:
- Micro Bird and Forest River Bus models are being recalled because the wheelchair restraint retractors may not lock, preventing proper securement for occupants.
- Nova Bus is recalling 2024-2025 LFS buses due to a seat belt retractor issue.
