SULLIVAN CO. – The Indiana State Police (ISP) Putnamville Post has been called in by Sullivan County Prosecutor Ann Mischler to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Tuesday morning in Sullivan.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:50 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18, at a residence at 615 South Bell Street.
Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department and Sullivan City Police Department officers were initially dispatched to the address in response to a report of a possible domestic situation involving a male and a female.
Upon arrival, officers observed a female in the roadway with visible injuries. A male subject, identified as Kylan Holbert, 31, of Sullivan, then exited the residence.
According to the report, Holbert immediately ran toward the officers while wielding a knife. Officers issued loud verbal commands for the subject to drop the weapon, but he reportedly disregarded the commands and continued to advance. One officer subsequently fired their police-issued gun, striking the male subject.
Medical assistance was immediately provided at the scene. Holbert was transported to a local hospital in Terre Haute and was later airlifted to a hospital in Indianapolis for further treatment.
The female subject was also transported to a local hospital in Sullivan with non-life-threatening injuries, but she refused medical attention upon arrival.
The investigation is active and ongoing, led by ISP Detectives Angie Hahn and Don Curtis, with assistance from Trooper Justin Bell and CSI Sergeant Tim Rader of the Putnamville State Police Post.
Assisting agencies include the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department, Sullivan City Police Department, and the Sullivan County Ambulance Service.
Upon completion of their investigation, Indiana State Police detectives will submit a full report of the incident to the Sullivan County Prosecutor’s Office for review. No further information is being released at this time.
