Fourth IU Fraternity suspended this semester after reported hazing incident

BLOOMINGTON Indiana University has issued a cease and desist order against the Tau Epsilon Phi student organization following a reported incident of hazing. This marks the fourth fraternity the university has suspended this semester alone due to similar allegations.

Tau Epsilon Phi

The IU Office of Student Life confirmed the suspension, stating that all activities at the Tau Epsilon Phi chapter have been halted until further notice. While the suspension is related to a reported hazing incident, the university did not release additional details on the nature of the alleged behavior.

A cease and desist order is issued when the university is conducting an ongoing investigation into an urgent threat or alleged conduct that may have caused harm to the organization or the wider community. Under the order, the organization is immediately barred from hosting, attending, or participating in any social, recruitment, or philanthropy events.

Pattern of Hazing Incidents

The suspension of Tau Epsilon Phi underscores a troubling pattern of behavior on the Bloomington campus this semester.

Phi Kappa Psi

Last month, the IU Police Department launched a criminal investigation into hazing allegations after another fraternity, Phi Kappa Psi, was placed on cease and desist. That incident reportedly resulted in two individuals being hospitalized.

In a separate incident this semester, the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity was issued a cease and desist order after hazing incidents were reported that resulted in at least three people seeking medical attention.

The university typically keeps organizations on cease and desist while it reviews the facts of the case to determine appropriate long-term disciplinary action.
